Program Information

Schuylkill Haven Recreation Department is bringing back an old program.    Grasshopper Baseball is something our town's children grew up playing. Now your kids can too!!

The program will start after Little League is over for children that want some more baseball in a recreational setting. 

We have partnered with a former college baseball coach to provide instruction to players and coaches during the season.

The program will be for ages 7-12.   


Tentative Dates: June - July    (Times will be dictated by coaches.)


Practices and games at this time will be on the Island Park fields.    

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This program is sponsored by Schuylkill Haven Recreation Department and is not affiliated with any other similar youth program.

This program emphasizes basic skills, fundamentals, team play, and general participation in an athletic program with children of the same age level. 



COST WILL BE:            Schuylkill Haven Area Students: $30 per child

Non Residents: $50 per child (if space available)


Program Instructor

Grasshoppers Program will have a guest instructor to help coaches and kids with fundamentals and skills.  Coach Chad!  

Chad Derck spent 13 seasons as an assistant baseball coach for the Kutztown University Golden Bears.   Just recently, Chad has joined the Schuylkill Haven High School Baseball staff as an assistant coach. 
In recent years, he mostly oversaw the KU hitters, as well as assisting with game day administration, recruiting, and the strength and conditioning program.
Chad's prior experience includes: served as an assistant with the KU program from 2003-09.  During that time, the team achieved many milestones including: seven PSAC appearances (PSAC Champions: 2005, 2006, 2008), six NCAA North Atlantic Regionals (Champions: 2004, 2007), two NCAA National Championship appearances, and a 2007 No. 1 national ranking by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
Prior to Kutztown, Derck served as the head baseball coach at Shikellamy High School from 1999 to 2002. 
A graduate of Susquehanna University in 1996 with a degree in psychology, Derck was a four-year letter recipient for the Crusader baseball team. Derck is a native of Shamokin and resides in Schuylkill Haven with his wife, Mara and their daughter.
